The best way to keep costs down is to get your house built right, says Michael Smith, the managing director of Home Depot’s Living Room.
To do this, you should look at every inch of your house.
“It’s important to take the time to understand how you’re going to get the most out of your home, and then make the most of every space in the house,” Smith says.
To get a sense of what you’re getting, consider the size of the home you want to buy.
Your budget will dictate what you need.
Your garage is ideal, but if you’re looking to add a backyard, consider having it set aside for a backyard dog, which helps your yard look natural.
If your house has a balcony or deck, the front end of the house could benefit from a smaller, lower ceiling.
“The best way is to think about what you want your home to look like in the future, and plan out how you want it to look,” Smith advises.
When you do that, you’ll be able to figure out which areas are going to need a bit of renovation or repair, as well as which areas need the most work.
“A good rule of thumb is that if you can get the home to last a year or two, then you’re making progress,” says Joseph P. Sullivan, director of the Design Architecture Institute at New York University’s School of Architecture.
“If you can’t, you’re probably building an unnecessary house.”

The more time you spend in the home, the less you’ll have to use it, Smith says, because you’ll get more out of it.
“I find that most people don’t realize that they need to buy a home if they plan on spending a lot of time in it,” he says.
2) Think about the spaces you want in your home.
If there’s a lot to do in your living space, plan for it, says Sullivan.
3) Think strategically about what your living room will look like.
You’ll want to find the best places for a fireplace and a fireplace counter.
4) Think of your bathroom.
Think about what will be in the bathroom and what you’ll need to do to create it. 5) If you plan on having more than one person living in your house, make sure you’re taking the right steps to keep them happy and productive.
If something breaks or needs to be fixed, you need something that can be replaced, so you’ll know what you can afford to spend on it. 7) Use your imagination.
You don’t need to spend all of your money on a house.
You can save a lot by using the time you’re spending to build it the right way.
“You can have a small house that will allow you to enjoy the beauty of your garden, and still have enough room for a family of five,” says Smith.
8) Choose a home design that will work for you.
